Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park South Rim

Thurs. Sept 22

This morning we took a short hike to the Chasm Overlook of the Black Canyon of the Gunnison. Again, it is difficult to comprehend how steep this canyon is at this point. The drop to the river is literally vertical from this point. When leaning out over the safety, you cannot see the sides of the canyon beneath you, and you just can see the river.

We decided to follow the road around the canyon to the South Rim. It took us nearly all day to drive around, and we ended up probably less than 2 miles from where we started.

After settling in, we took the bikes of the RV and rode to the Visitor Center a couple miles away. We watched a great film about the history of the canyon. It became a National Park in 1999, but was a National Monument since the 1930's.

I took a hike along the rim, marveling at the views.

There are oak trees here that grow to maturity at 10 feet tall. It is a harsh, dry environment. The average snowfall, even in what is considered a desert is 90 inches a year. Tonight, the temperature will be in the upper 30's and tomorrow again in the low 70's. Great weather.

I seem rather insignificant

Tomorrow we will go to Durango and link up with Chuck and Cheryl Carson for a few days.

It's hard to believe that we will be home in three weeks taking Evan and Anna to Spruce Pine. Time sure is passing fast. We left Beaufort only 6 weeks ago. In that 6 weeks we have had some great experiences, seen some incredible things, and met some wonderful people.
