To the Mountains

Sept 8

Since returning from Maine a couple weeks ago, we've been busy in Beaufort.  First, catching up on the mail.  After every trip of any length, it takes several days to sort through all the bills, magazines, and junk.

Then there are some minor things that I've had to do on the motorhome - such as a leak in the skylight in the bathroom.  I've got the leak fixed - I think.  I've put in about 5 waterproof barriers and a new skylight.  That should get it taken care of.

Dad stayed with us a week while Anthony took some well deserved R&R.

After all of this, I'm about ready for a vacation.  We haven't been to the Mountain House since May and I'm anxious to check on things up there.

Sunday I head out.  Clara decided she'd rather stay around Beaufort.  Slade and the kids have been begging us to come up and go out on their new boat, so I head to Cary for the day.

We had a great day on Lake Jordan.  Anna and Evan are both getting pretty good on the wake board and knee board.  And the other kid (Slade) hasn't lost it - yet!

The new Doo!

And the Captain!

Evan hot doggin! And showing some butt!

This girl's got it!

Or at least had it!

The old man showing his stuff!

Evan, I need a little more speed!!!!!

Evan, I need a lot more speed!!!!!!

He's still hot doggin!

What did I do to my body??????

We are the champions!!!!!
Mon, Sept 9

Early this morning I said goodbye to the kids (who were in various stages of recovery from yesterday's outing on the boat) and head to the mountains.  I stopped at the Marion YMCA on the way and got in a good swim, arriving here at the house around noon.

Everything looks great, except for the 1/2 acre behind the house where we had cleared out the trees last Spring that had grown up into our view.  The root systems of the fallen trees were prolific in their propagation of new trees, some of which had grown 6-8 feet over the very wet summer.

After checking everything, I decided I couldn't put it off, and headed down the hill with the weed eater which has a metal blade on it, and started whacking down the new growth.  I'm getting too old for this kind of work, but I did get it done.  And just to top off the day, I mowed the yard.

Monday night I crashed.

Tues, Sept 10

Mornings in the mountains are beautiful in the Fall
A veeeery slow start this morning.  Veeeerrrry Slow!  I don't think I'm cut out for manual labor anymore.

But, there is a pile of debris from the Spring clean up down the hill and it needs burning.  So the rest of the day is burning wood.

Did I say I'm to old for manual labor?

Another beautiful sunset from the mountain.
Wed, Sept 11

An even slower start today.  I think I finally rolled out of bed around 10 am.  The nights are cool - down in the 50's and it does make for some great sleeping.

Today is a do nothing day, and I excelled.  Although I did drive up to the Y in Linville this afternoon and swim for a while.  I think I'm recovering from two days of too much work.

When the thunderstorms move through the valley at sunset, it makes a beautiful sight.
Thurs, Sept 12

I haven't seen Bill and Jan since their motorhome trip out West this summer, so I head over to Asheville to spend the afternoon with them.  They had a great summer in their new (to them) motorhome and we enjoyed an afternoon reminiscing and thinking about doing some winter trips.

For dinner, Dave and Pat Marshall came over.  Dave and Pat were our neighbors when we lived in Brookwood Forest in the 1980's and 1990's.  They lived next door to Bill and Jan, and Bill and Jan live across the street from us.  It was like old home week.  They also own a motorhome, so it ends up that three neighbors all three of us neighbors end up as motorhome owners.

We enjoyed a nice dinner and stories about our motorhome travels.

Fri, Sept 13

The weather system I installed several years ago started showing some wrong wind speeds this morning, so I got on the phone with some tech help and figured out how to fix it.  However, it took getting on the roof and taking down the outside unit, which is located on the peak of the roof on a pole, which required getting a step ladder on the roof, extended it's full length, and climbing up in 20 mph winds.  Not fun! Now it works correctly.

I think I'll head back to Beaufort tomorrow.  The weather forecast looks good, and Clara has agreed to go sailing on the Pamlico Sound for a few days.
