Autumn gets married

Autumn's Grandparents

Slade turns 50

October 16, 2019

My Goodness!

My baby boy has reached the half-century mark!  I'm too young (three-quarters of a century) to have a son that old.

Jethro, Clara Prevost Quidley, Jim Lewis, Marie Mann (Jethro's sister), Mary Lewis (Jethro's sister)

But he is, and we are so proud of him and what he is accomplishing with his life.

He has a beautiful, loving family, has done extremely well in the corporate world (Cisco), and is just a great person.  As important as these accomplishments are, the greatest is that he and Candace have, together, given us two wonderful grandchildren.  Nothing in life has ever prepared us for the love and pride we have in Anna and Evan.

We celebrated his half-century mark by visiting one of Raleigh's long-standing restaurants - 42nd Street Oyster Bar.  Clara and I went there when we were dating, Slade and Candace followed during their courtship, and now we have the third generation there.  And it doesn't seem to have changed at all in those 50+ years.

As he turns 50, I am reminded that when he was born in October 1969, I was flying B-52's in Southeast Asia.  In fact, as best we can determine, at the moment of his birth I was on a bombing run near Danang, Vietnam.

In the following 50 years, all of us have gone through many lives.

Slade, from a baby in Blytheville AFB, Arkansas, visiting his Grandparents in Beaufort and Nashville, NC,  growing up and living around Asheville, NC, graduating from TC Roberson High School in Arden NC, graduating from North Carolina State University, marrying Candace, the birth of Anna, then Evan, to a successful career with Cisco, and many moves and events in between.

Us - Wow!  In those fifty years, we have lived a beautiful dream.  Leaving Air Force active duty, starting to work with Carolina Power & Light Company in Asheville, Clara working for Memorial Mission Hospital, moving from Weaverville to Arden (where we lived for 20+ years), moving up the ranks at CP&L, moving to Haywood County, then Garner, then New Bern, retiring from both the Air Force Reserve and CP&L, working in Economic Development and Chamber of Commerce in Mitchell County, moving to the Economic Development in Carteret County, and finally really retiring.

It all seems like yesterday.

And throughout all these transitions, moves, ups, downs, despairs, and exhilarations, the one constant source of happiness has been seeing our son grow and prosper.
