Key West January

January 6

We've been here for over a week now.  And for the most part, it has been entirely to cold (cool).  From weather reports we've received from both Spruce Pine and Beaufort, as well as discussions from points much further North, the entire Eastern part of the country is suffering through a surge of extreme cold and snow (even in Beaufort).

The discomfort here is primarily driven by wind and cool temperatures in the 60's.  Although nothing like what we're seeing from North of here, it has dampened the outside activities that we enjoy - especially in the evenings.

But, we'll outlast the cold and it will be warm.

We started the year (when it was in the 70's) with swimming in the ocean and a polar plunge here at the campground, followed by a party and meeting friends from previous years here.

We "brave" the cold water

Linda K and Marley do the polar plunge.  Marley is looking for fish.

Both the Kurfee's and Distasio's have arrived (they visited us in Beaufort) and we've gotten together several times for meals.  Additionally, Steve and Butch have helped me set up an extension so that we can hook our grill up to the propane tank on the motorhome rather than having to use the small canisters.  It was an arduous task finding all the right parts and pieces.  It took the better part of three days of buying, returning and experimenting to get it right.

The temperatures have moderated a bit and now we're back to the more comfortable range of 70+ in the day.  This always makes a big difference in how we interact here in the park.  Now everyone is out walking around and socializing, whereas the past few days of cooler temperatures tends to cause us to stay inside and work on "rainy day" projects.

With Steve and Butch's help, I've added an extension from the RV propane tank to the grill so I can just hook up to the RV and not have to use those little green cans.  It seemed we had to drive all over town to find the right parts, but we eventually got it right.

I'm also studying how to create a shelf in one of my basement compartments.  There's a space of about 8 inches in the top that I think I can add a shelf.

Sunday evening, we went to the Distasio's for dinner with Butch and Linda.

With the recent cooler weather and wind, the temperatures of the water in the ocean has dropped a bit and it's a little too cool for comfortable swimming.  Therefore, I'm going to the heated pool at the community college.  Between that and the gym here on base, I'm getting adequate exercise.

Monday night, we went to our first of the season shows at the Tennessee Williams theater at the community college and saw the stage show "A gentleman's guide to love and murder".  We really enjoy the live performances and plan to attend several more.

I haven't done a very good job of keeping up with the blog lately.  It seems that there is always something to do or somewhere to go. It is surprising how busy we can be and still have nothing to do.

I've started the process of the annual waxing of the motor home with the roof.  It seems counter-intuitive to wax the roof that no one can see.  However, the white roof is fiberglass, and unless it is waxed, the paint will chalk and when it rains, runs down the sides of the coach, making unsightly streaks white streaks.  Thus the wax.

We get together with Steve, Linda, Butch, Linda and Bob and Lynn regularly for dinners or just hanging out.  We've settled into a comfortable relationship and alwasy enjoy the company.

Saturday, January13 Clara and I ride our bikes to the Florida Keys Seafood Festival. It is not as large as the Morehead Festival, but had some good music.

It's hard for me to understand why Clara always stops at every jewelry booth.  She did end up buying Anna's birthday present while at the festival

Next week will be the best because Anna and Evan will be coming to spend some time with us.
